New Layer

When Doug brought the eggs in from the barn today, he instructed me to check out what he found.
It appears we have a new hen laying!  See the small brown egg on the bottom right?  A new layer will produce small eggs at first, and over the course of a week or two she will gradually lay larger ones.  What makes it even more cool is that this new girl is one that we hatched this winter!

Green Eggs and Ham?

A while back Doug stumbled upon an ad on Craigslist for some hens, a rooster, an incubator, egg turner, feed, and I don't know what else.  Anywho, it was an excellent deal that he couldn't pass up.  Doug has been looking at incubators for some time, but has been putting it off because of the cost of the equipment.

Back to the original theme of the post...one of the hens that came in the hodge-podge is an Easter-Egger.  An EE can lay a range of colored eggs, from blue to green to even pink!  We have been patiently waiting, and yesterday, we finally got a colored egg!
Looks like our girl is a green egg layer!

"Spring" Break

Even though the weather hasn't been very Spring-like, the kiddos still had a week off from school.  They headed north to stay with Pa, Gram, and Aunt Josie the first part of the break, and the second half with Pa-paw, Ma-maw, and Aunt Lisa.

Aunt Josie was kind enough to send some pictures of what they did...

Decorating the gumdrop tree

and dyed some eggs

Posing with the finished products
They even got colorful pancakes one morning

They spent one afternoon at one of Gram's friend's house, and got to see some unusual pets!

A pig play pen
Some baby emus
They even have an alligator in the house!
I do believe they all had a pretty good time.

Double Egg?

Not too long ago, we had a BIG egg.  Now we found another tiny egg!
L-R: Bottle cap, newest tiny egg, bantam egg, average size egg
When we cracked it, we were surprised to find no yolk, but another shell!
It never ceases to amaze us what we find from the chickens!

One BIG Egg

A few weeks ago we collected one huge egg, so large it took up Dallas' entire hand!
When we placed it in the egg carton, we couldn't even close the lid...
When we finally cracked it for breakfast one morning, we were blessed with a skillet full!

Teeny Tiny Egg

Last week while collecting eggs, I found the smallest chicken egg I've ever seen!

Take a look...
quarter, smallest egg ever*, average egg
At first, I thought it was an egg from one of the bantam chickens, but they are not in the same pen as where I collected the egg.  It was either from our Jersey Giant or Brahma, but we haven't found any other small eggs since.

Until next time...

*disclaimer: I have no proof that this is the smallest chicken egg ever.  I just know it is the smallest egg we have collected.

Fun Friday Fotos

Little Miss, the Fashionista
We are currently getting about 10 eggs a day from our chickens, so I decided to use some up by making deviled eggs...and I don't even like them, but Doug loves them!
My helpers were at it again...
by helping peel the boiled eggs
The other day I went to tuck Reba in for nap time, but she was already gone

Collecting Eggs

The kiddos love helping collect the eggs!  Sorry it's a little dark, but it was later in the day and there are no lights in the barn.
So proud of their collection! (yes, these 3 eggs were from a different day)

Eggs!

While out doing chores tonight, I found our first two eggs!

They're pretty small, but it's a start!
