Last night was the first night of religious education classes at our church. I was a little nervous about teaching solo this year, but then things got rolling and everything was fine. When the night started, there were only 3 students registered for my class which is the Confirmation group - 10th graders. I ended up with 5 students (4 girls and 1 boy) by the end of the night. I think it is going to be a really good year. I'm a little concerned about the end of the year when Buckwheat is scheduled to arrive...I'm not sure who is going to take over the class...but we have lots of time to determine that.

Okay.. I'm a bit confused. Being a Baptist and all, we don't do "classes." Eventually though I will have to go through the water-down Catholic class (aka new Lutheran class). So, what exactly do you do in this class? And I do have a catholic question for ya... so at my church, Jesus is off of the cross... how come in Catholic Churches he is still up there? Just curious!!

Ok...sorry it took me a while to respond...I wasn't ignoring, I just wanted to make sure I had my facts straight!
In the Catholic faith, the students take religious education classes throughout their "public" school time. There are a few milestones that they work toward as they go through, but the main purpose is for them to continue to learn and grow in their faith.
As Catholic, there are 7 different sacraments a person can receive (1: Baptism, 2: The Eucharist (communion), 3: Confirmation, 4: Reconciliation (confession), 5: Marriage, 6: Holy Orders (priests), and 7: Anointing of the Sick) Most people only receive 6 sacraments as you can't really receive Marriage and Holy Orders...priests don't marry.
So...as I mentioned earlier the students reach some milestones during their religious ed. The first is their 1st Communion around 2nd grade. The next is their 1st Confession. Finally, it is confirmation (which is what I am teaching). Confirmation is when the students reconfirm their faith (beings that parents make the decision to have their babies baptized) and strengthen their relationship with God.
Finally...why the Catholic church still portrays Jesus on the cross..we do this as symbolic reminder of Jesus suffering and dying for us so that we may be forgiven of our sins. I found this article online that goes into a bit more detailed if you are interested.

YAY! That actually makes a lot of sense. See, Andy is Lutheran and they do the whole baby baptism, first communion, and confirmation.. but I didn't know what the deal was with it. As a Baptist, you get baptised when you decide you are ready, then you are "allowed" to take communion. I didn't realize there was a whole process for others!!

I've been reading, and keeping up to date with you and Doug...just horrible at leaving notes. Just like I'm horrible at email, cards, phone calls, etc. And I was a com major? HA Anyway...sounds like things are going well for you too. And teaching religious ed, you go girl! :) I volunteer at our church as a youth group leader...it's tons of fun, and the kids are so great to work with.
How are you feeling? How many weeks are you now? I'm about 24 weeks, will be 25 this weekend, that means I'm entering my third trimester! I told Jason just yesterday, if we go full term...only 16 more weeks to go. Isn't that nuts!! Feeling great, lots of energy, although, I've started to get some heartburn, and an more easily worn out than I would normally be after working at the house. Seems I just can't get caught up. We've got our hands full, but it's a work in progress, and really...will be all well worth it in the end. I really am glad we're doing it now though, rather than December/January like we'd originally thought. We're making progress, so that's encouraging.
Anyway...so good to keep up with you. I really enjoy these blogs. I'm not sure my parents are cracked up on them, because they're just so unfamiliar with all this web stuff...but it's nice for people who are far away to keep up, and for Jason's family to see the progress we've made, since they grew up there.
