Strawberries!

This is only the second year for our strawberries, but they sure have done well!

This was the first night we picked...
We all enjoyed a bowl of ice cream and berries that night
The next night we enjoyed a strawberry pie
Then, after the next pickin', I made 15 jars of strawberry jam.
And after the third pickin', I made 9 jars of strawberry-rhubarb jam and froze about a gallon-sized bag of berries to use in pies later!

Until next time...

Hey Ladies...I think that strawberries are fairly simple to grow. You want to make sure you have a large enough space that they can expand and grow. My patch in Iowa and my patch here, were started with 50 plants.

We made two long rows out of the plants, and let the "runners" fill in between the rows and outward. You wouldn't want them much thicker because it will be hard to reach into the middle to pick!

The first year you have them planted, you will want to pinch the blooms off so the plants will send out the runners.

Lastly, you will want to cover them in the fall with straw or something similar to protect them from the cold of winter. In the spring, you can rake off the covering to allow the sun to heat the ground and all them to grow!

I have seen these tiered patches for sale if you don't have a big space, but I'm not sure how well they work - http://www.gurneys.com/pyramidal-strawberry-bed-w-sprinkler/p/12696/
